Improving Your Rental Place on a Budget
Sometimes, a renter wakes up one morning and finds out that his leased room, apartment, or home needs some enhancements to make it a better place to live in. However, renters do not usually do major home improvement projects because they will have to personally spend for these. In addition, landlords may not allow such projects to be done. Nevertheless, minor renovation and refurbishment tasks are usually welcomed. Here are a few things you can do to improve your rental home without getting into trouble with your landlord and without worrying too much about your budget.
First, paint your kitchen cabinets, especially if they are already worn and grungy. Use a semi-gloss paint for the exterior. Instead of painting the cabinets' interior, just put wax paper, wallpaper, or old place mats where your utensils can be placed. Next, replace old shower curtains and liners to make your bathroom look cleaner and newer. You can find a large curtain for only a few pounds in a home improvement store. Also, you might as well replace the old curtain rod with a new one.
You might also want to consider replacing old switch plates. Landowners usually never replace these items. Because these pieces cost only a few pence to a few pounds, you should consider replacing them. New plates can actually make a big difference with the aesthetics of a place. Consider buying replacement doors, too, especially if your rental place's doors are damaged by old age and the elements. Choose basic hollow-core ones which cost only a few pounds. Finally, ask the landowner if you can renew the entire interior wall with a fresh coat of paint. You can also replace old trims or mouldings. New ones only cost a few pence per square foot.
